◆ State Park
Devil’s Den
Monument Trails, waterfalls, and the national forest at the door.
A CCC-built state park whose trails run straight on into the Ozark National Forest.
Lift off from Thaden Field in Bentonville and head south down the spine of the Boston Mountains. Devil’s Den sits in a steep hollow of Lee Creek — stone bridges, bluff shelters and a waterfall the trail runs right past, all built into the landscape by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and largely unchanged since.
The draw for most riders is the Monument Trails system: purpose-built, machine-cut singletrack designed to world-class standard and threaded through terrain that already had the drama. Flow lines for people who want speed, technical rock for people who want to work, and the Ozark Mountain Bike Festival every spring for people who want both plus a crowd.
If you would rather be on foot, the park’s hiking and backpacking network keeps going long after the day trails end, spilling into the national forest that surrounds it. Horseback riding trails run the same ridges. Whatever you came to do, you can see most of the county from the top of it.
